Mathematics

At Holland Moor School we understand that mathematics is a tool that all people need in their day-to-day lives.  We feel it teaches children how to make sense of the world around them developing their ability to calculate, think logically, reason and solve problems.

We believe it is important for children to not only be able to find the answers to problems but to also be able to explain the reasoning behind their lines of enquiry using accurate mathematical vocabulary.

At Holland Moor we strive to create a learning environment in which children can enjoy their mathematics, confidently learn and gain a sense of achievement at all ages.

Early emphasis on structured play and practical activities leads to the introduction of our mathematics schemes.

These schemes cater for the entire primary age range.  We stress a good grounding in basic experiences and number skills.  A daily mathematics lesson is followed by each child every day.

KS2B Mathematics

During mathematics lessons the children build on skills previously taught in KS2A.

Each lesson begins with a pacey starter to allow the children to practise a range of previously taught arithmetic calculations.  This enables them to build up their speed and confidence at calculating fluently using all four number operations.

Each lesson always includes a problem solving task, related to the lesson objective. This is planned to rapidly extend the children’s learning. All children use a range of mental and written methods in the tasks.
